Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for WordPress

Every site needs analytics, and most add a plugin or edit a theme file to get it. CrawlWP has fields for your Google Analytics measurement ID and Google Tag Manager container, plus three script placements for everything else.

Free in CrawlWP Lite, and included in every Premium plan.

What it does

What CrawlWP header and footer code does

Add Google Analytics (GA4), Google Tag Manager, and any other script, without editing a theme file or installing a separate plugin.

The Header and Footer Code screen in CrawlWP, with fields for a GA4 measurement ID, a Google Tag Manager ID, and scripts in the head, after body, and in the footer

GA4 measurement ID

Paste the G-XXXXXXXXXX, and the Google tag will be generated for you.

Google Tag Manager

The GTM-XXXXXXX container ID, with the snippet handled.

Leave it empty to skip it

No measurement ID and no GTM ID means no tag is added at all.

Scripts in the head

Verification tags, consent tooling, anything that has to load early.

Scripts after the opening body tag

The placement GTM and some analytics tools ask for.

Scripts in the footer

Chat widgets and heatmaps, kept out of the way of your content.

Survives theme changes

The scripts live in the plugin, not in a theme file you will overwrite.

One place for every script

No more hunting through a child theme or a separate snippets plugin.

One less plugin to maintain

Stop updating a dedicated code snippets plugin just for a few scripts.

No coding needed

Paste what your analytics or marketing tool gives you. Nothing to write from scratch.

Works alongside your other tools

Use it next to Site Verification and Social Networks, which cover their own fields.

Why it matters

Why add scripts to WordPress through CrawlWP

Most WordPress sites end up adding analytics or tracking code by editing theme files, or by installing a plugin just for that one script. Both are easy to lose.

Edit a theme file, and the next theme update can wipe it out. Install a separate snippets plugin, and it is one more thing to keep updated.

  • Add Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager without touching code
  • Keep tracking scripts when you switch themes
  • Stop maintaining a separate code snippets plugin
  • Place scripts where the vendor’s instructions ask for
  • See analytics and search data as two different things

How it works

Add your scripts to WordPress in three steps

Set it up once. After that, the scripts load on every page.

Step 1

Paste your IDs

The GA4 and Tag Manager fields are all most sites need. Leave them empty to skip the tag entirely.

Step 2

Add anything else by placement

Head, after body, or footer, whichever the vendor’s instructions specify.

Step 3

Stop maintaining a snippets plugin

One less plugin to update, and the code stays put when you switch themes.

Analytics vs search data

Two different questions

Google Analytics (GA4) tells you what visitors did once they arrived on your site: the pages they viewed, how long they stayed, and what they clicked.

Search Console, Bing, and Yandex data, and CrawlWP’s index counts, tell you whether people could find you in search in the first place. You need both to see the full picture.

Questions

Header and footer code questions

Answers to the questions people ask most about adding tracking scripts in WordPress.

What is a GA4 measurement ID?

A code starting with G-, found in your Google Analytics property settings. Paste it into CrawlWP, and it adds the Google tag for you.

Does this replace a Google Analytics plugin?

For most sites, yes. If you need event tracking dashboards inside WordPress, a dedicated analytics plugin still does more.

Will the scripts survive a theme change?

Yes. The plugin stores them, not your theme’s header file.

Which placement should I use for my script?

Follow the vendor’s instructions. Most tags ask for the head. Google Tag Manager also asks for a snippet after the opening body tag. Chat widgets and heatmaps often go in the footer.

Can I use this for verification tags?

You can, though the Site Verification screen already handles Google, Bing, Yandex, Baidu, and Pinterest with a field each.

Do I need to add both a GA4 ID and a Tag Manager ID?

No. Use whichever one your setup needs. Most sites use one or the other, not both.

Is this free?

Yes. It is part of CrawlWP Lite, the free version.
